Sega’s maybe-online, maybe-NFT ‘Super Game’ is super canceled

phew

We have long wondered what Sega considers a “Super Game,” with the project only having been announced under that name as being under development and never having anything more to go on. There were hints that it might be online (with references to Phantasy Star Online 2), might incorporate multiple games, and might contain NFTs. But you may notice that we’re stating all that in the past tense, and there’s a good reason: The company has officially canceled the never-actually-revealed “Super Game” altogether.

Sega’s stated reasons for the cancellation are that following a long-term R&D phase and cautious exploration, in light of intensifying market competition and Sega’s own prospects, it was discontinued. No additional costs were incurred from the title, so whatever this “new form of entertainment that goes beyond the concepts of conventional games” was meant to be, it’s now never going to exist beyond whispers and speculation. And no, it’s not tied to any existing project. So while we can’t definitively say that this means Sega killed the game because of NFTs being worthless, it’s clear that tech buzzword didn’t help.
